Canvas prints –especially what is know as “gallery wrapped” prints — have become extremely popular over the last several years. The reasons are many, but one of the most compelling aspects of gallery wrapped prints is that they are ready to hang and do not need framing which, as we all know, can be frightfully expensive. In addition, printing a photograph on canvas lends the print an “artistic” feel and makes it something special.
I own a canvas printing company called Big Canvas Prints. We print all sorts of images for our customers from wedding photos and family portraits to a cherished photo from a favorite vacation spot.
The process that makes all this possible is what is called “giclee” printing. But since that is not a commonly used term, just think of them as digital ink jet prints. The inks that are used are pigmented and are meant to last, without fading, for a period of at least eighty years if properly cared for. You wouldn’t want to hang the print on a wall that sees direct sunlight. But as long as the canvas print has a protective UV coating, it should be fine. Every print that we produce has a UV coating.
So the next time you have to think of a special gift for someone — or for yourself — think of making a print on canvas.
